Katrina survivors from Mississippi’s Gulf Coast raised $31,364 for Hurricane Ike recovery. Donors specified the money, sent to Galveston County Recovery Fund, should be used to provide housing assistance and fund other essential needs for last year’s storm victims. Residents of South Mississippi know better than anyone what Galveston County residents are going through, said Ricky Mathews, publisher of the Sun Herald newspaper and fundraising organizer.

Just in time for spring break, The 70,000-square-foot indoor area of Schlitterbahn waterpark (www.schlitterbahn.com/gal) will reopen March 14. The tent structure has been replaced by a tropical-theme palapa. Other additions include a new snack shop, free Wi-Fi access, more seating at the wave-pool beach and a wristband for cashless purchases parkwide.
